A Beginner’s Frugal Guide on How to Get Cheap Flights

  1. Check for Flight Prices on different days of the week. This includes searching for deals on flights on different physical days of the week, as well as searching for flights departing on different days of the week.

  2. Check for Flight Prices on different devices. Apple devices such as MacBooks, Mac Minis, and iPhones, as well as Windows Laptops and Windows Personal Computers aka Windows PC’s, and even Android Smartphones have been known to show different pricing for the same flights.

  3. Different cheap airfare deal sites may have different pricing. IE Google Flights/Kayak/Flight Hub/ etc…once you narrow down your flight plans, don’t hesitate to check different Cheap airfare Deal Sites to see who offers the lowest airfares. Also make sure to use the low fare calendar when available (two of the best airline search engines, Google and Kayak, have one), as it will make finding the best departure and arrival dates for your trip a lot faster. While on the subject of cheap flight search engines, it will probably help you to know.
    A. Expedia, Inc. is an American-based parent company to several global online travel brands including Expedia.com, Hotels.com, Hotwire.com, trivago, Egencia (formerly Expedia Corporate Travel), Venere.com, Expedia Local Expert, Classic Vacations, Expedia CruiseShipCenters, Travelocity and Orbitz. B. The Priceline Group [NASDAQ: PCLN], is a provider of online travel & related services to consumers and local partners in over 200 countries through six primary brands: Booking.com, priceline.com, agoda.com, KAYAK, rentalcars.com and OpenTable. 4. Be cautious about saving the most money by using Cheap Charter flights. Charter services don’t typically have a fleet of aircraft, so if the plane your supposed to depart on has mechanical problems, guess what, you ain’t flying. This is especially concerning on shorter vacations, as you won’t get these delayed days back!

  5. Make use of an Airlines 24 Hour cancelation grace period. Airlines like Delta give you 24 hours to cancel your flight without being penalized, so after you book your flight, you can check back a couple of times in the following 24 hours to see if the price has dropped, and if it has, you can either cancel and rebook online or you can call the airlines customer service line and have them do it for you. Note to Canadians, if your flight is paid in US Dollars and converted into Canadian, even if the airline doesn’t penalize you, you will be penalized by the credit card company for a few percentage points between the buy and sell rate of Canada/US Dollars.

  6. Double check the cheap flight pricing with the actual Airlines website. After finding a flight you like on one of the cheap travel search engines, double check with the airline listed as the official carrier, and see it they don’t have an even lower special fare for those dates.

  7. Booking the flight in advance can Save a Bundle. Some flights will go up considerably in price as the departure date gets closer. Booking 6 weeks plus in advance can save you a bundle on the flight while giving you a vacation to look forward to. I booked my low fare flight for April 2016 from Winnipeg to El Salvador returning from Cancun to Winnipeg on Delta for just over $600. The flight would cost over $2000 if I booked for two weeks from now! And double if I booked for a month from now. The money I saved by booking my flight well in advance will pay for a good portion of my expenses during my 2 and a half week backpacking adventure.

  8. Is the cheapest airfare to an interesting destination the only criteria. If the exact destination of your travels isn’t a priority, try using the Kayak explore feature kayak.com/explore which will allow you to search from your home city (or any city you would like to leave from) based on price, providing a map of the places that are under your maximum flight price.

  9. Consider flying to a connecting city which has a flight sale or cheap flights to your final destination. For instance, if I check Kayak, I can see that the cheapest flights to Bogota Colombia are out of Miami, Florida (approx. 350 to 400 Canadian after conversion), and I can get a flight to Miami from Winnipeg for about $500, so a total of $850 to 900 to get to Colombia by flying to Miami first and connecting out of there. If I were to just book out of Winnipeg to Bogota, Colombia with a connecting flight through Toronto (not my choice) it would cost me 1300. A difference of about 400 to 450.

  10. Happy Cheap Flight Hunting. May the lowest airfare be yours!
